The Egyptian Museum in Cairo (the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities)

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo, officially the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, stands unmatched as a center for historical preservation and cultural education.

This masterpiece was the result of a contest announced by the Egyptian State in 1895 to host a unique collection.

One of the oldest collections of ancient Egyptian arts and monuments in the world, unlike many World Heritage sites, most were not originally designed as museums but were palaces, castles, ancient settlements, and archaeological sites.

The museum was established in 1902 and has housed a vast collection of artifacts over more than 5,000 years; its establishment was targeted at protecting the treasure of Egypt. The total number of items in this museum exceeds 120,000, and its exhibition explores the history of Egypt from the Predynastic era to the Greco-Roman one.

Marcel's dourgnon exquisite and unique design reflected complete genius behind Marcel's role for the museum, chosen from among many candidates, which he presented with an architectural heritage consisting of a wonderful classic of Greek and Roman civilization and the maintenance of ancient Egyptian temples with the character of the Italian Renaissance.

Architectural design of the building

The visitor passes through a beautiful hallway in the middle of the main façade to enter the museum. An ionic shaft decorated with the head of the goddess Isis flanks the entrance on either side. Two figures representing Upper and Lower Egypt, or the Nile Valley and the Delta, stand on both sides of the wall. It was also ornamented with graphic scientific sources bearing the names of Egyptian scientists and other personalities who contributed to the attainments in Egypt.

The building consists of two floors.

 Key Exhibits

Treasures of Tutankhamun

Probably the most famous exhibit of the museum, the treasures of Tutankhamun, as discovered by Howard Carter back in 1922, include the all-gold funerary mask and a host of other beautiful pieces that were the funerary furniture for a young pharaoh going to his eternal rest.

Royal Mummies

The Royal Mummy Room is a highlight for many visitors. It houses the remains of some of Egypt's most powerful rulers, including Ramses II and Hatshepsut. These mummies not only provide insights into ancient embalming techniques but also into the health and lifestyle of the pharaohs.

Statuary and Monuments

The museum ranges from huge figures of Amenhotep III to the small statues of gods and mere mortals. Each piece tells a story of artistic and cultural values pertaining to that particular time.

Papyri and Texts

Among the museum's broad collection of papyri are texts that reveal much about ancient Egyptian religion, administration, and daily life. Most interesting are the ideas revealed about Egyptian concepts of the hereafter in the Book of the Dead.

Papyrus and Jewelry

The collection includes various papyri, inscribed by the Book of the Dead, and fine jewelry exemplifying the ancient Egyptian goldsmiths' work.
